TOO MUCH WATER PRESSURE

Too much water pressure in a water distribution system can be dangerous and destructive. When fixtures are under too much pressure, they do not perform well over extended periods of time. The O-rings. stems, and other components of the plumbing system are not usually meant to work with pressures exceeding 80 pounds per square inch. Extreme water pressure can be dangerous for the users of the plumbing system. High water pressure is easy to control. Water pressure can be reduced with a pressure-reducing valve and, in the case of well Systems, with adjustments to the pressure switch. Troubleshooting high water pressure is simple; all you have to do is look at the pressure gauge on the well system or install a pressure gauge on a faucet, usually a hose. If the pressure is higher than 60 pounds per square inch, it should normally be lowered. Most residential properties operate well with a water pressure of between 40 and 50 pounds per square inch. If you have a well system, all you have to do is to go into the pressure switch and adjust the cutout setting. In the case of city water service, you will have to install a pressure reducing valve. If a pressure-reducing valve is already in place, you can lower the system pressure by turning the adjustment screw clockwise.

PRESSURE-REDUCING VALVES

Pressure-reducing valves that are not set properly can cause trouble in the form of low water pressure. If these valves are not adjusted to the proper settings, they can reduce water to little more than a trickle. Sometimes the adjustment screws on pressure-reducing valves are turned down too tightly. If you are dealing with a low-pressure situation where a pressure-reducing valve is involved, check the level of the screw setting. Turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise will increase the water pressure on the system. Pressure-reducing valves are not often the cause of a pressure problem, but they can be. It may be that the adjustment screw is set improperly, or it could be that the entire valve is bad. If you cut the water off at the street connection, you can check the building pres-sure by removing the pressure-reducing valve and installing a pres-sure gauge on the piping. This will eliminate, or confirm, any doubts may be having about the pressure-reducing valve.

WARNING: Do not take chances with your safety. The following information is strictly for educational purpose. We strongly suggest that you do not get involved with any water pressure regulator repairs on your own. All water pressure regulator-related repairs require professional training and experience with water, gas or electric systems and can be very dangerous if you don't have the appropriate training.
